Thoughts on Club-tossing.

140960729_dd7e96c2c8_mI wandered into the pro shop on Sunday afternoon, and one of the guys mentioned that Tiger Woods had thrown his driver into some weeds, in a fit on anger, and it took his caddy quite some time to find it.

Which reminded me of (Terrible) Tommy Bolt’s experience at the 1960 US Open at Cherry Hills.  In the final round, he threw his driver into a pond.  With 1000′s of people watching.  Well, some enterprising kid jumped in and retrieved it.  (To the cheers of the crowd.)

When he got out, he headed for the tee box, where Bolt was still standing.  Bolt turned to his caddy and probably told the guy to give the kid a couple sleeves of balls, when he returned the driver.

Well, the kid trotted up to the tee box, but before he got there, he stopped, gave Bolt the finger, turned, and “bolted” away.  Hopped a nearby perimeter fence, and was gone.

With Bolt’s driver.  Obviously.

True story.

There was a guy who lived here (Aspen, CO) for a long time.  Won’t mention his name, but he was a well-known mover-and-shaker in the community.  Died just a few years ago.

Anyway, he started one of the ski areas here, back in the 1960′s, and in the summer he loved to play golf.

So he was out one day with a friend, and the guy threw a club (in anger, presumably) and it hit this guy in the eye.

He wound up losing the eye, and from then on he– obviously– had no depth perception.  Which made both skiing and golf even more challenging.

I know, cuz I used to play with him, and you’d have to give him yardages.

And I always wondered: How did that friend feel, having done that to somebody else?  Was it worth the venting?

The guy in the pro shop opined, re: Tiger’s club-launching, that he wasn’t being much of a role model.

Two thoughts:

One:  Is Tiger acting less cuddly/feel-good, as he gets older?

Two:  Not to venture unaware into the political realm, but why do our pro athletes have to be role models, and Teddy Kennedy gets to cause a young woman’s death and never get called to account?  (And I’m a life-long Democrat.)
